Postmodern fiction, which appeared in a post-World War II period, bears distinctive qualities from other literary movements such as realism and modernism structurally, stylistically thematically. It can be perceived challenge against or attack on fixed language systems, subject matters, narrative style, plot development the face of modernist realist quest for meaning fragmentary world. One principal works postmodern literature published 1983, Shame by Salman Rushdie exhibits best features post-modern novel style magic touching some political issues significant characters turbulent Pakistan way historiographic fiction. Although seems to reflect real historical events, an imaginative subjective betrays its break with reality. deserves being called ‘a novel’ light key characteristics fiction fragmentation reflexivity, decentring subject, fictional framing devices plurality worlds, displacement simulacra, metafiction. Therefore, where loss reality is celebrated rather than lamented, I will try demonstrate how it worth title “a novel” resorting comparisons contrasts modernism.
